Introducing the 2021 Lent Guide: Memento Mori

Okay. Here’s the longer version:
I’m really excited about this (as excited as one can be about Lent), because this year, for the first time, we’ve included a built-in community aspect. Not only will you have the guide to help walk you through Lent and Holy Week, but we’re creating a place where we can walk together (if you did The Comfortable Words earlier this year, it will look very similar).
Something that I’ve learned from you guys over this past year is that we can bring community wherever we are. Especially as so many of us are trying to figure out our place in a church setting (or if we even belong there at all), and lots of in-person gatherings are still prohibited, being together online lately is valuable and encouraging. I think we all need each other.

Okay here’s all the official stuff:
Memento mori is a Latin phrase that means "remember that you must die." At first glance, it's not exactly the most uplifting statement, but upon further reflection, it's actually a request for emancipation from living a life focused on what will perish. It’s an invitation to life abundant, to the kingdom of God. Remembering that we must die releases us from frittering our lives away on the superfluous. Like an eye doctor’s appointment, a lever is pushed, a new lens clicks into place. We can see clearly.
Memento Mori: A Lenten Experience & Community is for those who ask questions about the true nature of the kingdom of heaven, who dig for Jesus in the cracks and crevices of daily life. It’s a community for the grieving brokenhearted, for the weary peacemakers, for the searching doubter. During Lent, we will look at the words of Jesus from his Sermon on the Mount, one of the most robust distillations of his theology and ministry. In this dissertation, Jesus provides a clear-eyed and powerful understanding of what it means to pledge your allegiance to the kingdom of heaven.

Lent is a time for repentance and reflection. It’s a time for getting reacquainted with our sorrows. It’s a time for making space for grief and pain and sorrow. For holding back and waiting. For leaning in and trusting when our lives are chaotic and uncertain. I’m so excited about this. I love your Lenten studies. I’m always on the periphery, I’m the worst with engagement. I’ll “like” and “heart” all the things but never comment and tend to keep my mind to myself. But I still love that this community exists and can be apart of it. Thank you for doing the work of thinking, creating, writing, and executing something so meaningful.
I grew up Southern Baptist....like for realz. I did all the things. Super Summer camps, Baptist University, summer missions through the home mission board in high school and college, and 2 years in China after college. I am heartbroken by what my church has become. I no longer attend a southern baptist church. I have come to realize that I am grieving a loss. I'm 47 and feel like I'm a boat without a way to the shore. I honestly don't really know what Lent actually is. I mean I have a vague idea. I'm in Texas, so I always thought it was a Catholic practice. Like give up soda or candy and don't eat meat on Fridays. I am going to try and actually "do" Lent....but can you give me a small idea of what it actually is....other than the basic "give up an activity or food item for several weeks".
