š„Lil Treasures #167: Walking Bacon and The Asbury Revival
We're talking about HIPAA violations and jobs we don't get paid for (but should)
Hello and welcome!
Happy Friday, guys. How are you doing? I was reading this morning that half of the U.S. is battling some pretty serious winter storms, yāall okay out there?
Here in weird Alabama we are experiencing springlike weather that makes me slightly concerned about the earth melting, but also happy that my personality seems to be returning. I hope wherever you live that you are staying safe and that your power and HVAC units are working robustly. The treasures are waiting, letās go!
This weekās treasures:
šŖ¢ Our treasured Sister Bethās memoir, My Knotted Up Life, officially came out this week! Iām about halfway through reading it and feel so honored that she would grace us with her story. I cannot stop talking about it; of course, itās excellent, but she absolutely shot the lights out on every page. Kate Bowler interviewed Beth about her book over on her podcast this week and it was such an important conversation. You can listen to it here!
š If youāve seen the buzz about the Asbury revival that was going on in KY and had some questions (skeptics unite), Jamie & I unpacked our thoughts & feels on a Mini Favored or Forsaken for Bible Binge Seminary.
ā Lent has officially begun and Iām absolutely loving digging into Ecclesiastes with some of you! Itās not too late to join us for the next 40+ days if you still want in. Click here to join The Swipe Up+ for Lent or here to purchase the digital version of the study online! (And donāt forget to use code LILSWIPES if you do)
At the risk of bugging the heck out of all of you lovely folks, this will be the last time I bring this up in my Friday emails, but just know you can always email me about it at hello@erinhmoon.com if you have questions!
ā¦ļø For my Mmmboppers out there, did you hear that Zac Hanson got ordained to the orthodox diaconate? I could not believe it when I saw it.
š This week I read this sobering article in the Washington Post about American teen girls, what they are facing and their desire to be listened to. I am still processing it but I highly suggest you give it a read, especially if you are raising a daughter.
š° If you feel overwhelmed by the various news stories weāre currently living through, you might find comfort in this post from Savannah Locke.
š My wise and wonderful friend Trey Ferguson is writing a book! Iād love it if you considered donating to help him raise the funds for publishing. You can find out more about the book, called Theologizinā Bigger, and how to give at this link.
š§ŗ Nothing feels more real than this list of full-time jobs it would be nice to be paid for. I would be a rich woman, let me tell youā¦
Letās do the Tweets, shall we?
Thatās all for this week, my friends! I hope your weekends are full of moments of care for yourself and for others. See you in the comments!
There was an Asbury Revival in my University of Kentucky college/teenage yearsāthe 1970āsāand I succumbed from atheism to joyful Christianity. Off campus, on the corner of Maxwell and Mill Street, there was a grand old abandoned 5-story school with 2 basement levels that became āChrist Center.ā It was led by Asbury graduates, and became a haven for troubled college students (like me) and a large assortment of young adult humanity. I wrote a few stories about that experience in my writing class at UK with Kentucky poet and author Wendell Berry. There is just too much of those years to tell in this Commentābut the idea of another Asbury revival is truly exciting!
It has been a week. My mom called asking if I could make plans to go home and stay with my grandmother while she was out of town in March. This worried me a little because when I was home at Thanksgiving my grandma was perfectly capable of staying home alone so long as her phone was nearby. Then I got a call Tuesday night that my grandma was at the local ER being stabilized for suspected kidney failure and awaiting transfer to one of the larger regional hospitals. She's stable currently and probably in for a few more days in the hospital, but it is looking like dialysis is going to be part of her future. My mom filled me in on some details from the past several months, and while I don't know how much of this could have been prevented, I am now extremely frustrated with how the medical team handled everything leading up to where we are now. Also, because of all of the above I've had to cancel my ice skating class that was supposed to start this weekend. šš
In between all this I'm trying to find a new house and not spend too much time thinking about why my neighbors have decided to be such gigantic jerks (I suspect it's just one of them, but I'm counting the other one as complicit). Hopefully I'll be able to see some places tomorrow and get the ball rolling.
