Hannah! Our monsteras are twins. Same color pot, similar mix of fenestrated and non-fenestrated leaves, and identical levels of plant chaos. I love it! Mine does not try to grow through the blinds, but that’s just because I leave them pulled up so she can get plenty of sunshine while I’m at work. 😊 Thank you for filling in for Erin while she’s on her trip. And for reminding us to look toward the light.
Oh man, the only plants I can get to truly thrive are aloe and I’m not exactly sure what I’m doing. Everyone else is surviving or on the brink of death. If something good happens with them it’s just a stroke of luck because i haven’t a clue on proper plant care!!
This weekends treasure - experiencing and exploring Lancaster city, PA. And For King & Country Christmas concert!!
Plant lady here! Really digging into that grandma-llennial life. So! Im not naturally good at plants but I like the decor and how they brighten up my house. And now I have over 20 😳 anyhow the only way they have survived so far is because I downloaded an app that tells me when to water them. It is such a gift 🙌🏼 it’s called planta, it’s free, and this is not an ad 😆
Hiiii! Yay Hannah!!!! I have something like 15 plants but most of them are outdoor pots that just need a little water sometimes, and the two indoors are also extremely low maintenance, so I am no help but when it's dry, water it. lol
I have a few potted plants, but they live outside and survive primarily through benign neglect. One of them is a replacement for a begonia that was gifted to me by a client. I brought that plant from the brink of death twice, it was blooming and beautiful, and then the deer ate it. I have held hate in my heart for the deer population of central Texas ever since.
I spent my birthday on Sunday driving home from Thanksgiving with my family, but my best friend made me a birthday playlist, and it's one of the best gifts I've ever gotten.
Hello Hannah! Fellow Plant Lady here (although I’m gen X). In my classroom I have: 4 golden pothos (named for each golden girl), a cobra/curly fern, a Chinese money plant that’s propagating its little heart out, a philodendron, several succulents and an orchid. At home I have snake plants, elephant ears, and a sweet little garden that I hope to grow into a mini farm.
10 years ago I couldn’t keep an air plant alive but here I am farming my way through my 40s. It’s fantastic.
I deeply admire your dedication to planting and farming! I feel like if circumstances were different for my dad, he’d be retiring on a farm with a greenhouse full of plants and lots of vegetable crops and pollinator flower beds. I take after my mom...who is the polar opposite of a green thumb. 🤣
I've fallen into a Fred Penner rabbit hole this morning, and it's just delightful! Is he known in the states? I know Kate Bowler is Canadian so that makes sense, but he was a HUGE part of my childhood. I can't wait to finish that podcast.
🌵 Am I the only millennial woman without houseplants? My mom had several when we were little; they always got knocked over, and I had to clean up the dirt. I avoid them now, even though I live alone and therefore the plants would not be knocked over...
It's been a chill week here in NC; I've mostly been resting and reading since I had to people a lot over thanksgiving.
📚 I've read 132 books this year and briefly considered trying to hit 150. I made a great TBR stack that I'm excited about, but then I realized I average 10 books a month and would have to spend every spare minute reading. After two days of feeling a bit guilty when I listened to podcasts/music/IG/tiktok instead of books, I realized that I would rather enjoy all the things instead. 🤣🤣
All that to say, I'm reading the latest Myrtle Hardcastle. If you like middle-grade books, I highly recommend this series. It's set in Victorian England, and Myrtle is a fun little detective and burgeoning feminist.
❄I made a bunch of paper snowflakes to hang up around the library, and it's just so fun to see them when I come in each morning.
I am not a house plant girl either. My dad has an amazing green thumb. Sadly, my mom has a brown thumb and I take after her. 😞
I’m so proud of you for hitting 132 books read! After a lackluster past few years of reading (in 2020, I read ten books...and 7 of them were Harry Potter...which I’ve read a thousand times before...), I hit 26 books last year and 52 books (an average of one per week!) this year and I’m confident I can do a little more next year. Tell us your speed reading secrets!!!!!
Woohoo! 52 books, that's awesome 🎉🎉 The two biggest things have been learning to read multiple books at once and the fact that the library is WAY less busy and stressful than the school. I have a print book I read a work, either at lunch or when the desk is slow; I have a print book I read at home after work; and then an audiobook that I listen to whenever. I can have a headphone in pretty much all day at work if I want to.
The Kindle app and desktop site are a lifesaver for me, especially since I use Libby religiously. I always have a print book on my coffee table, and I’m trying to read a daily devotional, theology book, non fiction, and fiction book at the same time to help get my stories straight.
Hi Hannah! I'm a newly retired veggie farmer who has now been relegated to care for my 17yr old ADHD daughter's houseplant "children." She's named them all, which I never keep straight, but the fern died (I told her she wasn't allowed at the service)🤣 and the others have honestly just barely held on for me. Growing lettuce and carrots is WAY easier to me than figuring out the nuances of lik8 different types of plants. 😵💫
I can't get upset, though because she got the ADHD from me, and I actually love the green in the house.
I'm super jelly of Erin and Jamie being in Europe right now, but my husband and I have been finding new hobbies since my life is more normal now and we're still in our 40s! I have started banjo lessons, which I adore! And we are staying active by doing hiking and backpacking. We're planning a trip to backpack the Cotswold way and southern Poland next Spring!
Aww, thanks! I'm not sure my husband and teens are so impressed hahaha... Especially since I practicing the living room every morning at like 9:00 a.m. I found a really great online learning program and it's going great-so far I can play like five melodies with just my thumb LOL. I grew up around the Ozarks and one of my great uncles would play it and jam with family members at get togethers and I always loved the way it sounded. I've never played an instrument in my life but I'm making a point to focus on doing things for me at this stage in my life and it's a great way to keep those neural pathways growing as I age.
Houseplants & Harry Potter, two of my greatest comfort items. :) Here's hoping Erin does not take a look at those baby stingrays before chowing down on the ravioli part of relics & ravioli! 😂
Hello all! It’s been a hot minute since I’ve been in the comments but I’m at home for virtual continuing education today so I’ve got all the time in the world!
Hi Hannah! Thanks for taking the reins this week! Re: houseplants, my best recommendation is to follow Happy Happy Houseplant on Instagram. She has all kinds of tips and tricks. My second recommendation is to get her plant food. You add it to the water every time you water and when I tell you this stuff is good...I have eight live plants in my house, two of them being fiddle leaf fig trees. Only one of them is not thriving and I’m 100% sure that is because it is small, was not watered by my husband while I was gone last week, AND it needs a repot. Seriously though, give her a follow and check out her highlights (she has them about watering and planters and all kinds of helpful things).
We are in a time of year that leaves me super conflicted. I love the twinkle lights and decorations and Hallmark movies (don’t judge-it’s literally the only time my anxious brain gives it a freaking rest), and the idea of downtime with my family that lives in my house. BUT. Then there’s the flip side of LOTS of travel, family who refuses to make plans so that we can make plans, a super full calendar (full of mostly fun stuff but still more full than I prefer), and this year there seems to be something else going on with my brain that’s making me not sleep and be more anxious. I’m not sure what my point is. Maybe just that if anyone else is conflicted, I’m right there with you.
I don’t have much else to report and I need to go try to log in to my computer (which ended up taking 45 minutes and a call with tech support yesterday🙄). I am trying to finish a Wattle and Loop project while I’m watching but also will try to check back in here later! Happy Friday!
What a treat to hear more from you, Hannah! You do great work.
I hate to kill the vibe a little, but I have some sad news to share. A few weeks ago I had a stroke.
It’s been quite the journey, and I’m expected to make a full recovery, but there are lots of challenges ahead. As you know, I’ve been my mom’s caregiver for the past few years, and while we’re trying to make it work, she simply can’t help me recover. So I would greatly appreciate your prayers.
You can hear the whole story at this link for a fundraiser my friend set up for me. The hardest part of this is that I need rehab but have no insurance while being a caregiver. So please feel free to share. Love you, guys!
Oh Jules, I am so sorry! Thank you for sharing the link here so that we can support you in tangible (and intangible) ways. Sending love & hugs & praying hard over you. ❤️

Monstera twins! Great minds think alike

Do any of us know what we're doing with plants? Probably not.

Jenna DeWitt I need to see these plants! You are so lucky to be living in the land of sunshine. Send me a pic!

I just finished this book about Native Americans in comedy, and it was FASCINATING. Big recommend: https://bookshop.org/p/books/we-had-a-little-real-estate-problem-the-unheralded-story-of-native-americans-comedy-kliph-nesteroff/15822174?ean=9781982103057
Hope you had a great birthday despite the driving, Beth! 🥳

I have been eyeing a money plant! Is it fairly low maintenance?
Yes! I have Moneypenny sitting on a table in my classroom and just water when she’s dry.
I deeply admire your dedication to planting and farming! I feel like if circumstances were different for my dad, he’d be retiring on a farm with a greenhouse full of plants and lots of vegetable crops and pollinator flower beds. I take after my mom...who is the polar opposite of a green thumb. 🤣

Isn't Fred just wonderful?
Good job, Hannah!
Bravo on that advent reflection, Hannah!!! Gonna be rereading that one.
Thank you pal 😘

🎄I ordered an advent calendar from TaleMeCo on Etsy, which came this week. I did one last year and she just has such cute bookish goodies! https://www.etsy.com/shop/TaleMeCo?ref=shop_sugg
132 books!!! That’s amazing! It’s been hard to read since 2020, but I’m working on my 20th book of the year 💪
132 books! Girl you have been busy.
I am not a house plant girl either. My dad has an amazing green thumb. Sadly, my mom has a brown thumb and I take after her. 😞
