🍟 Lil Treasures #199: The Audacity & Stealing French Fries
We're talking Emotional Terrorism Island and Apocrypha for Beginners.
I am reporting live from Emotional Terrorism Island, where I am looking at pictures of Baby Cy as an actual baby because yesterday was his birthday and somehow he’s a whole six years old and frankly, I find that rude.
I mean, the audacity?! Who gave you the right, sir?
For some reason, my family thinks the height of class and elegance is The Cheesecake Factory: it’s where we go for all major occasions, and of course, Baby Cy has inherited this belief system from his sisters. The girls usually beg for me to tell their birth stories, but Cyrus “hates babies” because they “walk around with poop in their pants” and “are disgusting” so he wanted no part of that.
In light of my fragile state, we’ll just jump straight in. Thank you for respecting my privacy at this time.
Let’s do the treasures!
📰 Are y’all New York Times Gamers? I have three text threads going where I share my scores every day, and we’ve just added the newest game, Connections, to the morning roster. Are you playing yet?
📡 This week on Faith Adjacent, Evan and I got to chat with Dr. Brandon Hawk, medieval text scholar and author of Apocrypha for Beginners. He is crazy knowledgeable, but in a way that doesn’t make you feel like a ding-dong. If you’ve ever wondered why some denominations have “extra” books of the Bible, this one is for you!
✍️ I absolutely adore this very helpful advice about criticism from Truman Capote.
💟 As a fully grown adult who has no business enjoying Olivia Rodrigo as much as I do, I loved reading this interview with her about Guts.
💒 If you are within driving distance to Minneapolis, MN next weekend (Oct 13-15)s or you find yourself without plans, you might want to register for the Evolving Faith conference! I truly believe it is the most thoughtful conference in the realm of Christian conferences, headed up by some of my favorite people (Sarah Bessey? Jenna Dewitt? Jeff Chu? Ashleigh Nelson? Osheta Moore? I mean, come the heck on with it!). When you buy your ticket (whether digital or in-person), you get access to the online community for a whole year as well, which is just as kindly curated as the conference itself. If church or faith are complicated for you right now, you could find a home here, and I hope you’ll check it out!
2️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ I need your help! Next week will be the 200th edition of The Swipe Up and that feels like something that should be celebrated! What should we do? Giveaways? Just a normal post? A best of the comments section? A Christmas gift swap? I am ready to receive any and all ideas. Hit me with your best shot in the comments.

That’s it from me. Think of me fondly as I will be at not one, but two children’s birthday parties this week, one of which I will be hosting. Ts and Ps appreciated.
Can’t wait to hear your treasures!
Cheering the EF shout out!! Y'all this year we have so many amazing speakers. Krista Tippett, Dr. Wil Gafney, Barbara Brown Taylor, Nadia Bolz-Weber, The Many as our worship artists... As mentioned above, even if you can't watch this weekend, you can watch later at your own pace or use it as your church's fall retreat (we have a group discount and premade guide!) or whatever works for you.
Give aways sound great! I love the idea of a Christmas gift swap but if I’m honest with myself I DO NOT need anything thing on my list for that time of year 🤪😄
