🩳 Lil Treasures #205: Owl Jewelry + Inventing Jorts
Executive Functioning Theft and a little casual Advent plan
Are we doing it? Are we doing holidays yet? I feel like all my people are kind of hanging on by a thread, yeah? One of my kids told their teacher yesterday: “I’m not mad at you, I just feel sad and I do not know where it goes.” Another one of my kids told me between sobs that they feel like they “can’t make anyone laugh anymore.” 5/5 Moons have screamed about something this week. I tried to make a harvest garland and the neighbor kid asked me what I killed (crafts are hard). Everything feels tense and also too tender to the touch. Not sure what to do other than to keep doing our small acts of peacemaking and justice-bringing, to not forget, to offer prayers, to place a call, and to continue to educate ourselves and listen to different perspectives.
Let’s do the treasures!
🕯️ Last week I asked if any of you would be interested in reading The First Advent in Palestine: Reversals, Resistance, and the Ongoing Complexities of Hope by Kelley Nikonheda for Advent this year. About 30% of you said “absolutely” and about 30% of you said “it’s possible” so whoever wants to join us, we’re doing it. It’s going to be very lowkey and laid-back because that’s all I have to offer this year. All you have to do is get the book and start reading. I’ll be posting some of the discussion questions on Sundays just for those who sign up next Lil Treasures (so the Lil Swipes list will continue undisturbed) and you can feel free to walk through them in the comments if you want. AND AS A VERY COOL BONUS: Kelley Nikonheda will be joining us in some capacity to answer questions and share a little bit of the behind-the-scenes of her book (more on that later). This all costs zero dollars (except for buying the book), and I hope if you’re kind of dragging your butt towards Advent (🙋🏻♀️), you’ll consider doing this small, but reflective exercise with us.
🚨 CONTENT WARNING: TAYLOR & TRAVIS - PLEASE SKIP TO THE NEXT ITEM IF YOU ARE CURRENTLY AT CAPACITY🚨 - As always,
tells us exactly why some of us are besotted with this very public and for some reason not annoying (I realize some of you are extremely annoyed by it) relationship and why it feels like the best reality show we have to watch right now. And bonus points for weaving in my fave Mad Men character, Dr. Faye.🥧 Yes tis I with another Half-Baked Harvest recipe that I will attempt next week for Thanksgiving. Do I make pies? No. Am I going to give it my best shot? Sure am.
🍊 Next week I begin Christmassing my whole life and I am also feeling extremely Little Women-y, so we’re attempting some dried orange garlands this year. Crafting is hard for me, but yet we persevere.
🪐 It was somehow cathartic to watch Iliza Shlesinger give Gen-Z a rundown of contextual background for why Millenials are they way they are. When she mentioned the owl jewelry and small batch lavender ice cream, I shot into outer space (language warning).
🫶 Love you, Mary Oliver’s Drunk Cousin.
📡 This week on Faith Adjacent, we put out our final classic episode, this one about Joseph, adoptive-ish father of Jesus. We’ve finally run out of Bible stories that warrant an entire episode! We’ll still be doing the podcast, just without that episode type, but I’ll miss these a lot. Returning to some of these passages with fresh eyes, many of which I had not read since I was a kid, was so crucial in helping me love and genuinely delight in scripture again. The Bible has become a friend to me, which is something only a gigantic nerd would say. Anyway, I’m really proud of the work we did on those classics, so if you’ve never checked them out, we’re pretty decent company if you’ve got a long Thanksgiving drive coming up.
Meme Dump-a-Thon:
I hope you all have a lovely weekend! No Lil Treasures next week in observance of the week of Thanksgiving here in the States! I’ll miss you all and I’ll see you in December!
I started listening to the Bible Binge recaps classics in one of those dark nights of the soul nights in Spring 2020 (you know late night anxiety early pandemic ones!) Searching for something to listen to that had the word Bible in the title at 3 am. I don't think I am exaggerating in saying y'all were the bridge helped me transition between churches and kept me stitched into my relationship with God. Thank you!
And oh boy those kid emotions! Lots of raggedy edges in my house as well.
I have been crying too. These teens 😫😫😫. Honestly some days lately I’m just tired. I am going to get lots of small naps in over the next 5 days. Have a great thanksgiving ❤️
