coming in a little late here because 1) I can’t sleep so starting at my substacks is my ideal way to lie here 2) it’s been a minute since i’ve popped into these comments! ♥️
erin I feel you on the resentful-ness of busy weeks. when I know I have a busy week, I like to all myself the lazy genius question of, “what can I do now to make things easier later?” and that often looks like this:
- a larger than usual grocery order with some frozen pizzas or eggos or bagged salads or whatever to take off the burden of cooking
- planning outfits a few days at a time so that I have to make less decisions all at once
- prepping breakfast. if I have a breakfast ready to go, my life is 100% better. sometimes it’s having all the ingredients for a smoothie prepped and I just need to throw it in the blender. sometimes it’s a high protein banana bread that I bake on sunday and eat through the week.
- planning a recovery day after the crazy. knowing I have a rest day helps me power through lol
Thank you for sharing that post from the pastor in Springfield. I got even more excited when I saw it was from Carl Ruby, he was a dean at my university while I attended there. He was one of my favorite people we had in leadership, an amazing guy.
Erin!❤️ This Natalie Lue quote helped me finally decide to say no to baking for an event I dread every year. It always happens a week after Thanksgiving (my busiest week of the year), they ask me to bake for a super reduced price, and proceeds go to a cause I’m not passionate about. I’ve been doing it out of a false sense of obligation for a long time. I sent a gentle and kind no today, and I immediately felt so much lighter. Thank youuu for the encouragement!
A couple months ago I went to a Quaker meeting and I loved it so so much. I love my church community, but that running water Carrie Newcomer mentions in the podcast is exactly right. What a gift. I hope to go again soon.
I have been watching SLoMW, and I have thoughts! One thing I’m curious about is the amount they curse — is “clean” language not a commonly held Mormon value? I know Christians curse too, but in my Christian circles it’s not to the degree of what is on the show, so I don’t know if I’m just naive about how much people curse. And with all the other “Mormon values” that come up, it’s never mentioned. Did anyone else notice this?
The Chargers video right after the baby tortoise video....you just warded off my anxiety and depression for AT LEAST 4 hours. Thank you for your service lol
So much good stuff in here, thank you. This week’s Faith Adjacent was FANTASTIC. As usual, I just wish the people who most need to hear/read things, but never will, would. Also, glad I watched that whole tortoise video to the end so I could be brought back down to reality about getting one. I’m currently reading The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs by Steve Brusatte, which is excellent, and of course while I was watching that video, I just kept thinking how cool to have a little tiny dinosaur to take care of. Adorable.
I am so happy you linked to the Anne Helen Peterson article! Right after she talks about Rebecca Claren’s book she dives deep into Jessica Goudeau’s book who is a dear, dear friend of mine. We are excited her book, We Were Illegal is getting the attention it is! Her book is the one diving into the Texas history and the problematic ways we tell stories. Please check it out, you will not be disappointed!! 🎉💚

I love this for you (in a genuine way) 💜💜💜
Dang if that Jordan Harrell poem didn't smack me right in the middle of my feels. I'm not crying, you're crying.
Definitely shared the contrarian one from your stories to mine as a hint to some people lololol

Oh my gosh how fun would that be?!

I read Jessica's first book and would love for all the people screaming about "illegal immigrants" to read this book and gain some compassion.
Completely agree! After the Last Border is also fantastic. She is putting amazing stuff into the world!
Ohhhh this sounds great! I will check that out!
