My treasure last week was being active on Instagram with actual posts not just stories. I love stories but I decided since the world is a 💩 show and every thing is wild to jump in on the #theapriljoyproject that a lady Lashawn Wiltz has folks doing this month and it’s been refreshing. Prom shopped for last minute things with my 17 year old yesterday and we had crumble cookies 🤮. Way too sweet. And I love the memes. Cory Booker is so refreshing and yes politics are doing a lot of people but I’m not sure if they even realize that. This is zombie times for too many folks and I am not sure if folks will truly wake up. 😫
Hear me out on this one. Is it *possible* that trump tanked the economy because he knows the only person who could save us now is another round of the Eras tour because he’s actually secretly a Swifty?!? Or is this just in my wildest dream (🎶oh ah aaaaah 🎶)
I’ve been trying (trying being the operative word) to focus more on the little joys because obviously the world is a dumpster fire, my job involves holding a lot of trauma, I have tiny children, and by the middle of the week it often starts to feel like way, way too much.
It sounds trite, but the sunshine we’ve been having has been such a balm for me this week. Literally touching some grass always grounds me more than I expect. This also seems to work for my 6 month old, thank God (although he also tries to eat said grass which is a little less awesome). Other treasures this week include a surprisingly delightful cardamom caramel cold brew, beer and board games with friends, an afternoon nap trapped with my baby, reading
books with my three year old, and peony tulips on my kitchen table.
Honestly, we escaped the US for the week by coming to England, and if we hadn’t left the baby at home (God bless my parents), we may have stayed. Also, it gives me a bit of perspective when there were things happening here 100s of years before we were even a country.
Erin, I hope you're getting some time in the chaotic everything to take a breath and do something that makes you feel like you. Lean into your inner Enneagram 9 and bury your head in the sand for a little while.
Here are my treasures: I asked ChatGPT to make an action figure of me (which didn't work btw) and it asked me a few get-to-know-you questions. The examples on this are my fave.: What are 3–4 small accessories you’d want included? (Examples might be: coffee mug, book, laptop, fishing pole, candle, Taylor Swift album, Zoloft bottle—whatever feels most “you.”)
The Zoloft bottle SENT. ME.
Since starting meds, I've been on the hunt for a good therapist and have tried a few but hadn't found the right fit, and then, glory hallelujah, I was served an Instagram Ad for Grow Therapy, and I started with a new therapist a few weeks ago. I absolutely adore her. I have cried every time so far and spend the rest of the day in an emotional hangover, but dang, I love therapy. So, shout out to ViDonna.
And finally, tonight we have my daughter's 12th birthday party, and we're doing a murder mystery dinner and then a sleepover. My husband has volunteered to be the murder victim, we'll have a fancy tablescape and the birthday girl's request of gnocchi with tomato sauce, and then the girls are sleeping in our tent trailer in the backyard. I'm also surprising her this afternoon when she gets back from her dad's house and we're going to get mani-pedis. I am stoked.
Praying you all have a weekend that brings you the joy of a 6th grade sleepover with your favorite friends.
Update: It was MAGICAL. (They're all still here- leaving in a couple of hours.) Murder mystery was solved. I put little fairy lights and battery-operated candles in the trailer for them when they were going to bed and got it all cozy in there. My hubby went out this morning and got them donuts for breakfast. And none of them fell asleep until after 5am.
I am now swimming in so much nostalgia for that specific, incredible delight of a middle school sleep over. What a dream.
Also, I find looking for a good therapist to be almost as bad as dating (worse, maybe?)—finding a good fit is such a victory. Celebrating with you and might have to talk a little less smack about the instagram algorithm.
This is the best political account to follow right now. She does a great job placing our current moment in the context of American history. She also does at least one video a week (usually two) listing Trump's Ls for the week (my personal favorite intro for these was "welcome to the Petty Ford Center, so that's the vibe here). Highly recommend the Get a Grip highlight as a starter. https://www.instagram.com/amandasmildtakes/?hl=en
Plans today include picking up my Costco membership cards and a Paul Simon concert, so I guess I'm officially "of a certain age" now.
Argh we didn’t know that there was a new SNL episode because it didn’t show up in Peacock for us on Sunday!! *shakes fist* The way Ego rolled with the audience’s response and stayed in character…she is a QUEEN.
Feeling better this week after spending most of last week with a hyper vigilant nervous system that wouldn’t calm the eff down. I also finished a sock with some super fun self striping yarn and a bright yellow toe and heel for contrast, and am so excited to knit the 2nd one!
I woke up feeling good about the day for the first time in a while and that just feels really nice.
💩 I didn't make it to the second round of interviews for the teen position which is a bummer.
🎶 I auditioned for a solo in choir! nothings been announced but I'm proud of myself for going for it.
🌈 We filmed our summer library program promo video that I co wrote this week and I'm very excited to see it! It's going to be very cute.
🧵 I've been patiently waiting for JoAnn's to have a good discount on the apparel fabric and I was rewarded. I did a little prebirthday shopping yesterday and got some fun fabrics that would typically be out of my budget.
🎤 I've recently discovered personal attention asmr. It's just so calming and I'll put it on while I do chores or sew and it helps me recenter. Jocie B ASMR and OceansASMR are two of my favs on youtube
🤣 If you need a hilarious chaotic show to keep you going in these trying times,Taskmaster and Game Changer are my two favs.
❤️ Y'all, my birthday is next Thursday and it's also the first anniversary of my grandmother's passing. I've taken Thurs-Mon off to give myself some time to rest and feel my feelings. Gram loved birthdays and her specialty was getting your card to you as close to your actual birthday as possible. She was such a loving woman and it's hard to believe she's not here with us.
My treasure this week that I got my offer accepted to get a house!! In the midst of the chaos of the world, I’ve been trying to find a house that I can one day own and make my own, and I’m one step closer!!
As I look toward the last month and a half of the school year with a 15-year-old daughter and eight year-old daughter, a deployed spouse and ongoing perimenopause”“pleasures” I’m feeling this ENTIRE feed! I’m escaping in the humor of Samantha Irby, Dunkin’ Donuts Jellybeans (we listen, and we don’t judge), and my new friend, Substack. Stay strong, Jesus will return, soon??

The cold brew sounds delish! And hold those babies a lot they’ll be teens in a blink of an eye. ❤️

I’m still waiting on the Dramione recos.
Ok same. I just finished the mortifying ideal of being in love and I. Need. More.

Every good thing to you. 💚
Taskmaster and Game Changer are vital to my well-being 🤣
Aw, I’m sorry to hear about the teen librarian position. 😕 I hope something else even better comes along!
We are huge Taskmaster fans in our house. Have you seen Taskmaster Junior? It’s pretty incredible.
I've only watched the first few episodes. I need to go back and finish it!
So so good. It’s the entertainment I need right now.

Concerned about you sweet Erin.
I'm okay, I promise. 🫶
I appreciate that you’ve been transparent about your mental health in your past. Hey, I’m down to only 3 meds! Remember it’s ok to not be ok.
