Favorite things about the opening ceremonies:

- Tiny delegations. I see you, 3 athletes from a country the size of my hometown. Get after it.

- Learning about different alphabets. You only thought L came before S.

- Announcers assuming they have a way more knowledgeable audience than they do. "If you think about Mexico and golf, you think about Gaby Lopez." I'm sure she's incredible but I do not spend much time thinking about either of these things.

- How do the Ralph Lauren uniforms get more preppy every time? I will say that if I was on Team USA, I would be stoked about getting to wear jeans.

- My ever-present yet naive hope that maybe NBC'S coverage will suck less this time.

My mom has been nagging me to go to the doctor about my back after falling down the porch steps right before Memorial Day. What started as "please help me appease my mother" has turned into scheduling an MRI and bone density scans after some semi-conclusive x-rays. No, I have not marshalled the strength to tell her she was right.

I took my dog to work to clean her teeth. The meds I gave her beforehand kept her from trying to murder any other dogs, so that's a plus, but the anesthesia really took it out of her. It's really pretty pitiful. I also had a generally pretty crappy week at work, so here's hoping we'll both wake up in better shape tomorrow.

I'm typing this while watching the opening ceremonies and WHY does anyone think we want or need more "Imagine" in any form?

I'm late to the party but had to say - thank you, Erin for sharing Common Hymnal. That David Gates poem was gorgeous, and I can't wait to deep dive the whole site! His poem on Enneagram Beatitudes also made me almost cry - https://commonhymnal.com/blog/enneagram-beatitudes?rq=enneagram%20

I've been quiet the past two weeks because (turd alert) Real Life Crush and I had "the talk" and he was not ready to move forward. So we aren't seeing each other anymore. And that sucked. And I almost didn't say anything about it here because I'm tired of being sad about it, but I know y'all are people who celebrate alongside others and you grieve alongside others. And while comparatively this feels like a "small" thing to grieve, it is a disappointment. So thanks for being with me through this.

On to some sweet treasures that have made me smile this week:

- This poem personifying and affirming everyday objects: https://www.instagram.com/p/CRjqrxkjb6D/

- Sweet sweet Geoffrey wishing for a glass of beer: https://www.instagram.com/p/CRj_qq6I9u_/

- Pinky Patel reminding me that girls are the shit and we have places to go and things to do: https://www.instagram.com/p/CRMuRNCFGEN/

- Getting to sit at my favorite coffee shop with my big sister and hold my niece Daisy: https://www.instagram.com/p/CRpkGytJBIH/

I love you all and hope you have a lovely weekend full of exactly what you need. ((big hug))

Y’all - I feel in a vast minority here, but I do not like the Olympics. 😳 I do have an Olympic memory, and it was when my mother drove us 30 minutes from home to a church parking lot on hwy 78 to watch the torch runner come through Oxford, Alabama on its way to LA for the 1984 games. I remember mostly sitting in the back of our station wagon backwards seat with all the windows rolled down so we could wave and cheer as the runner ran past. My mom bought us souvenirs from the “event” - Olympic torch nightlight, that I know are still rolling around her house somewhere. 😂

Second favorite Olympic memory is Al Roker stirring a drink while Matt Lauer and Billy Bush tried to make excuses for Ryan Lochte’s behavior in Rio. The gif that produced is one of my favorites of all time because it so often represents my inner monologue. 🤣

My treasure this week is being at my parents for a few days with 2/3 kids and the husband. We are having our HVAC replaced and I am glad not to be in a hot house while that is happening but I also don’t like not being there in case of problems. It seems to be taking longer than they expected which may mean a couple of nights in a hotel after we leave here which will mean cancelling our 3 day beach trip in September but I guess it is what it is. 🤷🏼‍♀️

So y’all who celebrate enjoy your Olympics, but I’ll just be grateful for Netflix so I can watch season 2 of Never Have I Ever and avoid “the games” altogether 😂

I've been absent for the last few weeks. I missed everyone. I don't know what I've been doing but its been a crazy summer - that is now almost over. I got a adjunct position at a local university teaching a couple intro psych classes so it's not permanent and has no benefits and the pay leaves much to be desired BUT it is a foot in the door and a good way to ease back into teaching after not having done it for close to a decade. But after a year plus of rejections this is the light at the end of the tunnel. Hopefully next semester they will have a few classes for me and eventually maybe an actual lecturer position will open up and I can actually get benefits. A piece of my tooth broke off at some point?? I do not have dental and always have to pay out of pocket. Literally, who decided that teeth shouldn't be a part of healthcare? fingers crossed my dentist will be reasonable about how much this will cost to fix. Also I am at the "teeth breaking randomly" age now. so grateful.

I've been filling my time by working on myself. I have been depressed this summer and having problems with family, my husband, and had so much malaise that I could barely stand in the kitchen long enough to make a meal of grilled cheese sandwiches for my kids. But bless my therapist (who I also pay out of pocket 🤦‍♂️) for giving me much needed perspective, my doctor for listening and suggesting things, and my husband for being by my side even though I've made his life harder during this time.

Because of this, I have made zero time for vacations, reading, anything fun really. I hope to do a few fun things before I begin work outside the home (again please note - for the first time in a decade!!! eeek!!). Any suggestions? This is made especially difficult to plan because my husbands work schedule has been insane and his boss fired everyone except him and two other people so he literally can't take time off unless one of those other two people will cover for him.

Hope you are all well and planning wonderful things for the last few weeks of summer. Please share with me your fun plans so I can live vicariously through you! Much love, Mona

Good morning! Last weekend we drove to Omaha with the kids and spent a couple of days exploring the zoo and other Omaha attractions. You guys. If you find yourselves driving down I-80 and wishing you could stop and see something other than corn and soybeans, do not sleep on the Omaha zoo. It is magical. Gorgeous habitats, healthy happy animals, and some of the finest Midwest people watching you could hope for. It was worth the eight hour drive from Denver. I mean, I'm not getting a membership anytime soon, but it was a solid day of surprises and educational nuggets.

Other than that, Omaha was...not too bad, actually. If I was inclined to move away from Colorado, I could see it on my short list. They're punching above their weight in the downtown aesthetic and culture departments. I recommend it for a long weekend!

Happy Friday - A while ago I posted about being single again after 8 years and well...I may not be single anymore and the whiplash of emotions are big. I also have had an increase in migraines - I think from trying to treat my allergies... isn't life a joy sometimes?! Anyway here is my treasure that I will watch until I die on days like today: https://www.instagram.com/p/CRmbxbEnQCn/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

Every time the Olympics roll around, I host a feast of nations during the Opening Ceremonies. I serve as the host country (naturally), and invite everyone to select a country to represent through food/drink and dress. It's become a tradition and slightly reminiscent of a homeschool third grader's themed birthday party. I put very little money into it, and it's the most eclectic potluck you ever did see. I've got my kimono, sushi and sake ready to go for tonight! I hear Lithuania and Jamaica will be making appearances, as well as the OG Olympians, Greece. Last I heard, Great Britain was still trying to recruit a few more Spice Girls to complete her vision. A true delight! I've been holding tight to this tradition for well over a decade. When I was Brazil, I remember having a funky green signature cocktail with a giant mosquito floating in the punch bowl...I guess Zika was a concern then? Unsure but gotta keep on theme, ya know?

Guys, what a freaking week. My biggest treasure is that I am only a few sleeps away from a week with a few fellow Swipes 😍😍 we have been counting this down with the Avengers theme on MP, and I cannot freaking wait to give them the world’s longest hugs. I’ve been go go go in a mostly good way for the past couple weeks and am so excited for a chill weekend. Also, if you watched Loki, don’t miss the episode of Assembled on Disney+. Narrated by Sir Tom Hiddleston and he is all over being a DELIGHT, but don’t watch till you have finished the show 😂

Other treasures include this tweet which sent me: https://twitter.com/emilygathergood/status/1417875783889170432?s=20 and these Tiktoks per usual.

Goooood Morninggg! (said in the voice of my peppy gen-Z Circulation clerk whom I love and adore) I just came from starting to play the google doodle which is not only delighting my Olympic nerd heart, but ALSO my nintendo girl heart! ITS SO FUN! GO PLAY IT!!

I drove into work this morning listening to the Prophetic Imagination Station Podcast (DL and Krispin Mayfield - talking about evangelical popculture starting with Adventures in Odyssey!) and have a chicken mcgriddle and its 8 days till my wedding and 6 days till summer semester ends and ALL IS WELL.

I don't remember if shared that James and I bought a house - its been delightful getting it settled - though I CANNOT WAIT to live there full time and not have to drive back to my parents every night. Its a cute little federal style condo with a bay window, and the neighborhood is 80% old people and dogs. There's a neighbor with a GIANT-A$$ cupid lamp in her bay window and I need to be her friend.

looking forward to catching up in the comments! its been a hot second! :D

Happy Friday!

I remember watching the Rio Olympics with my new baby, eating homemade brigadeiros, watching Gisele walk at the opening ceremonies, and thinking "Yup, if she was from my country, I'd feature her too, dangggg." I also vividly remember that they featured hobbit holes AND the Spice Girls at the London Olympics, and it was weirdly very much my vibe. Finally, I've always been much more of a Winter Olympics girl - I got suuuuuper into curling in college and I might still follow some professional curlers on Twitter?

Treasures from me:

We've been making smoothies for a year and a half from this book and they are hands down, THE most delicious. Anyone else trying to get more fruit/veg into their kids via drinks?

- In the middle of People We Meet on Vacation, but otherwise, I need new book recs please!

- Y'all, Sharon McMahon (@sharonsaysso) has a podcast and it is incredibly good. I was listening to episode 2 while making dinner and actually said "holy s***" out loud - WHAT A STORY! Diphtheria, ice floes, stuffed dogs, and carnivals all feature so. Definitely worth a listen.

Getting all packed up for our CA trip over here. If anyone has suggestions for how to keep calm with a 5 year old on an almost 5 hour flight, I'm all ears!

Erin, it's all your fault. I know sob rock enough that is stuck in my head all the time, but not enough to know all the words. Help, it's driving me crazy. Stop listening or just do it over and over ??? 😂😂😂

It's moving day! I got the go-ahead to start moving into my new place this weekend and have been slowing moving some things myself since Wed, my friends come tomorrow to help with the furniture. I'm so excited to be in my own place again even if it is my 5th location in Hickory, lol.

This week has been pretty chill, just trying to finish my last few assignments for the summer semester and trying not to stress over job stuff. My interview last week went really well, they were very kind and engaging and I walked out really pleased. I should hear back from them today/Monday.

Meanwhile, the HS where I teach FCS is now hiring a librarian, I'm fighting with myself bc I know it's not the job for me, but I want a library job to build experience and I have a decent shot of getting this one. I don't think that the school as a whole is the right fit for me and I've really struggled with loneliness there, adding to that one of my 2 friends is not coming back next year. I think it's absolutely the right decision for her, but I'm tired of starting over every year- my whole dept left in spring 2020.

Happy Friday, everyone!

I have an Olympics-related mystery that is bugging me: on this week's Popcast episode, Jamie mentioned Shawn Johnson, and it brought back this memory that I can't seem to prove ... It was the 2016 Olympics, and during the gymnastics, they panned over to a former Olympian who was now there, I think as a commentator. The voiceover was talking about how this Olympian had been expected to win multiple golds but shockingly did not. During this whole 60-second segment, this person was tragically picking her nose the entire time, really going at it, but they never panned away. When Jamie was talking, I felt like maybe it was Shawn Johnson. But I can't find anything even remotely connected to this. Was it maybe someone else, or just a crazy dream I had? Does anyone else remember seeing this? This bothered me for months after I saw it, but I had forgotten ... until now. lol

My favorite Olympic memory is from 2003, when I had a newly broken leg and was attempting to navigate stairs on crutches (don't do it). I fell, sliding down a flight and taking out an Olympic gold medalist (Kim Black, swimming) with my crutch (we were working together at our local seminary over the summer). Thankfully she was a lovely human but golly was it embarrassing. She actually ended up lending me her gold medal and warm ups so my younger sister could wear them to school one day for a presentation she did, which my family still talks about all the time.

In non-relay news, we are planning to have some neighbors over this afternoon for a kid pool play date/happy hour for the 21+ crowd, which I am really looking forward to. Nothing much on the docket this weekend except for the slow continuation of the 20332 house projects we are currently working on. Looking forward to reading your treasures!

I’ve loved the Olympics since I was a little girl. I would have my mom check out the 2 tape VHS Olympic retrospective from the library and watch it over and over again.

I’ve had the distinction of being in Olympic cities only not at the Olympic times😅. I loved touring the Olympic Village in Vancouver after the fact. I got to be in Beijing but before the Olympics. Though I got a picture with the countdown clock. And I spent a summer in Greece sadly two years before the Olympics there. I’m excited for LA 2028-coming to where I live baby!

I’m already up all hours of the day and night with Phoenix so I’m excited to be watching whatever is on these next two weeks. I will say Twitter is a popping a lot more at 2 AM right now because of all the journalists in Tokyo😂.

Happy Olympic celebration day. Put on the Olympic theme and enjoy!
