Late jumping in on comments. Was planning a big Barbie bday party for myself on July 21st, but instead my college-age daughters woke me at 12:30 a.m. that morning to tell me 1) Happy Birthday, Mom, and 2) Dad is on the floor of the bathroom and unresponsive. Long story short, he'd fallen 2 days earlier, and now had a subdural hematoma (brain bleed) and was rushed to the hospital for an emergency craniotomy. So Barbie party will be rescheduled, husband is still in ICU, I'm caring for our 3 adult daughters with all the TLC in my veins, driving from MN to IL tomorrow to move my 86yo mom into a nursing home and move one daughter into her college apartment, I start my new job in 4 weeks, and so yeah...it's been a lively few days.

The girls and I saw Barbie last Wed. and it was perfection.

I saw Barbie at a Thursday matinee and it was delightful. I laughed and cried and just thoroughly enjoyed it.

Hello, friends. To be honest, I love this weekly check-in. It is a grounding way to round out my week!

As far as rhythms go, here are some that have helped me when I'm feeling stressed (or bothered by the fact that it is way too hot).

-Eating fresh, local food.

-Making sure that I shower daily.

-Blocking off time to read.

-Spending less time on social media.

-Knitting and listening to podcasts (Here's Where It Gets Interesting and Pantsuit Politics' More to Says).

I went to see Barbie last night for a friend’s bachelorette party. I went as Ballerina Barbie. Blonde wig and all 😆

I am in a #TeamErin phase where I’m just not that into movies of any sort, so I’ll read reviews and spoilers and call it good.

We’re on week 3 of visiting our extended families for the first time since Covid and it has been both wonderful and...not so much? I’m realizing that being out of my own routine for this long is more stressful than I’d anticipated (and wow I miss my bed and my dog!) Getting to stand with my feet in the ocean and listening to the waves crash has been remarkably therapeutic after the last few years. I’m soaking up all the ocean vibes I can get before we head back to the Prairies.

I firmly believe that there are few movies that need to be longer than 2 hours. I suspect Oppenheimer is probably an exception, in which case I believe we should bring back intermissions for movies. I had slightly forgotten about ALL the movies out this month, so the order of events for my next couple of weeks of movie-viewing is: Indiana Jones, Mission Impossible, Oppenheimer, with Barbie as the grand finale. By some miracle, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is still playing locally, so I saw that on Tuesday. Definitely recommend seeing it on the big screen if you can.

I've mentioned this IG account here before, but you need to see this geologist getting emotional about a volcano: https://www.instagram.com/p/Cu0K0k_N3S0/

That video is awesome! I feel like that whenever I see a monarch or a goldfinch, so I can relate! Have you seen @artofsoil page?

No! There were a few when I searched - is it this one? https://instagram.com/art.of.soil?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

Re: Oppenheimer - Go see it in the theater! It's very good and if you watch it at home with distractions etc it won't be as impactful.

Oh my gosh, this season has been so hard! My mother in law is in cancer treatment and simultaneously having to put my father in law in long term care because she can’t take care of both of them. This “sandwich parenting” season stuff is a lot. Lately the things that that keep me tethered are exercise, pool time with our kids, & designated blocks of time that my husband and I can talk about anything else besides his parents.

Pool time is a life saver for sure. Hang in there. 🤗

Yep, untethered. That is the word. It’s been a summer of grieving-with and often feeling incapable of taking care of myself along with it. But it’s actually really helpful to name the things that *are* keeping me tethered these days:

1. I bought myself a new Kindle and losing myself in reading has been great.

2. All of my comfort podcasts - of course I know I’m not supposed to listen to more than The Popcast and TBB. 🤪 But True Crime and Cocktails is another go-to — Lauren Ash and Christy feel like big sisters. And whenever I hear Emily P. Freeman’s voice, I can exhale a little. And Kate Bowler.

3. Any feel-good, good news stories I can get my hands on.

4. I was a free agent for a cornhole team in January and now we’ve played 3 seasons together and also hang out as real pals. This unexpected friend group is a joy.

5. Finally, the reality that my vacation is 2 weeks away. Enough said 😎❤️

I am at work. I do not want to be at work. I have to work the weekend and I am so tired. I'm sleeping well, I just don't feel rested and I've had to do a lot of peopling this week which has worn me out.

I haven't been up to a lot this week, just reading and library programs. I finished the audio of Red, White, and Royal Blue yesterday and loved it!! I'm hoping to finish Happy Place this weekend and I've enjoyed it so far. I was a little hesitant bc many reviewers didn't like it as much as her previous, which I understand but it's still been enjoyable.

A house about a mile from my family got listed for sale and we took a lovely walk over there this week. It's such a cute street and there is a little neighborhood park at the end of the road. I'm hoping to see it on Monday!

Bc of working this weekend, we're going to attempt Barbenheimer next weekend. I learned from this newsletter that Oppenheimer is three hours, but honestly sitting in a dark room for three hours sounds perfect right now.

Thank you for the update on Karis!! I saw the refund and was surprised, but was hopeful it meant she got a car another way or something. Sent her a Venmo though!! So frustrating for her to deal with all of this!🩵
