Hi Jamie, can you tell me when I should be using Naturium Retinaldehyde? I currently use cleanser then CoxRX BHA, then Clarins Double Serum, then Charlotte Tilbury magic cream all because you told me to in your little free sheet from your substack. (It has been a game changer! Thank you! I'm 90 days into taking care of my super old face for the first time and I am grateful to you!)

Does Naturium Retinaldehyde replace the serum? or go after? before?

Excellent Q! I like to use any retinol products right after cleansing//BHA/essences or as my first “serum.” So in this routine, you’d use it after CosRX, and before double serum.

Thank you! Ordered. You should really be getting comission on face stuff.

Cackling over here 💀💀💀

Treasures this week include it finally not being 90 degrees in Kansas. Seriously. Also season 3 of upload and GBBO are here so I have laundry folding company again! Substack for being a place to thoughtfully engage in the really hard things of the world these days.

That blanket went on my wish list IMMEDIATELY. I have always hated being hot, and add all the hot flashes and night sweats - NO THANK YOU.

Treasure this week was the book A Disappearance in Fiji by Nilima Rao. Fascinating historical mystery with great characters and education.

Thank you Jamie! I loved reading the origin story of The Popcast! Also when you all teased on the socials that photo of Erin on the floor overwhelmed by the special guest, I would never have guessed it was NT Wright. I can totally fangirl over NT Wright. I was delighted that he was on The Holy Post but when Faith Adjacent popped up and he was there too, I might have shrieked. And when you asked him if Paul was hot, I literally couldn't breathe!... and when he answered, he confirmed what a lovely man I knew he was! Erin, get well soon!

The NT Wright episode was so so good. I can't wait to get and read his book on Romans. I studied that letter for about 4 months last year, and it is so so so so good and deep and hard and worth picking apart again and again, just as Dr Wright said. I can't wait to return to it with his book as a guide.

JBG, you are a delight.

In addition to your cooling blanket, may I suggest the most penthouse Jamie thing I own?

It’s a Chilipad and it is a delight. It’s a mattress pad that runs cooled or heated water through little channels and I’ve slept with it set on 62 every night for 3 years and I sleep so good and never wake up sweaty anymore. Worth every single penny (and it’s a lot of pennies).

Erin, we miss you!

P.S. does anybody know if that ring works with the Libby app?

Two things. WANT THAT PAD. And yes, the ring works with reading apps - just not an actual physical kindle.

Hi Jamie! SO glad you are here, and thank you for recreating something I dearly missed (sub days with movies and snacks 🥲). I hope Erin is resting and recovering from her picklefall!

It has been a minute since I've been in the comments here (and I really missed you all!). So my treasure this week is a two part-er.

Part 1: I am pregnant with my first ever tiny human! 🥳😱🙃 (Equal parts exciting and terrifying lol.)

Part 2: Slightly related, this video is *perfection* and has my husband and I absolutely dying with laughter every time: https://www.instagram.com/p/CRHpXixn0Lp/?hl=en

(It now also gets quoted daily in our apartment.)

Also, if anyone has any maternity clothing recs, please share!! I am having a hard time finding clothes that make me feel like myself and aren't $$$$$. 🥲

I will be sweating in 90 degree Los Angeles weather, but I hope all of you have a cool & crisp fall weekend! 😊

Congrats! I lived in Target t-shirt dresses. They're super cute and not sloppy-looking and I actually still wear my black one 2 years post-partum. I used to put a blazer over them if I needed to look grown-up.

Oooh, that is a great hack. I still need to dress business casual for work, so the blazer trick would be awesome. Thank you!

Congratulations!!! I wore a lot of plus sized clothing and only bought legit maternity clothing staples like shorts and underwear. The underwear is great especially post partum! Target as a ton of cute maternity things that won’t break the bank too. I basically lived in sweats. 😂

Congrats! And I loved old navy for maternity stuff. They are having a good sale right now too. And kid to kid consignment stores if you have those, they have maternity section. I mostly did maternity bottoms or my pants with a Bella band ( not sure if they still have those but if they do they are great for helping you stay in regular pants longer) I did not buy a bunch of maternity shirts. Just a few that I wore endlessly the last two months. 🤣

Thanks for being a super fun substitute teacher today Jamie!

This week's Faith Adjacent made me emotional with how happy I was for the team to get to interview NT Wright. I could feel Evan's anxiety when Jamie asked Dr. Wright if he thought Paul was hot (and Peter in the seminary bonus), and it was delightful. The answer to the question on what Paul would say to the church of the United States really stuck with me. At first I was skeptical when the core message was on unity because my brain set off alarm bells about how we need alllllll the diversity, but man, he landed that plane.

I'm not a doctor but my job since I graduated from college has been to pay very, very close attention to the minutiae of pharmaceutical drug development, so for anyone struggling with menopause symptoms: if you can find a well-informed practitioner who practices evidence-based medicine, you should absolutely ask them about menopausal hormone therapy (MHT, also called hormone replacement therapy or HRT in other countries). The evidence behind MHT is BOUNTIFUL and it helps so, so many women dealing with menopause symptoms. There's also a lot of misinformation about it out there (similar to all women's health things because wellness influencers are excellent at fear mongering), so please please please consult your physician before ruling it out. There are a lot of ads out there now for a new drug that's an alternative to MHT but it truly does not hold a candle to MHT in terms of the breadth of research and product efficacy. I'll step down from my soapbox now :)

Grace, shout it from the rooftops! I’m a Registered Pharmacy Technician and have been stunned/frustrated/livid that so many doctors are still basing their decision not to prescribe MHT/HRT on the results of one study from 20 years ago that received a ton of press but whose results have been repeatedly questioned/debunked since then. Even in my recent training, the message was essentially “this works great but most practitioners still don’t prescribe it because of the WHI.” Contrast this with a study on diglet uppers where there were also significant adverse events (including heart attacks) reported, but the investigators decided they “weren’t treatment related.” Simple as that. “Nah, bruh, it’s not the drugs.” Okay then. Gender bias in healthcare is alive and well.

Fortunately my GP has been very open to questions about MHT and after starting it a month ago, I am *STUNNED* by how much better I feel. I feel like an actual human being again. The brain fog is improved, I no longer feel dead inside emotionally, I have more energy, I can sleep through the night, I’m not angry all the time.

Keep on that soapbox, friend! We need to normalize and VOCALIZE this area. 💜

Jamie, thanks for substituting, I'm so glad you're here!

My treasure is a book I read last week but am still thinking about, Ink Blood Sister Scribe by Emma Torzs. It's about two sisters and magical books and trying to figure out who you can trust and I loved it!

Friends, I need a red lip recommendation (for Taylor Swift-related reasons, obviously) and I have no idea where to start. Lipstick? Gloss? How do I pick a shade of red? Why are there so many different shades of red? Please help!

MAC’s Ruby Woo is a classic that looks good with almost all skin under stones and doesn’t make your teeth look yellow 😉

I love the Maybelline Superstay Matte liquid lip or the superstay lip crayons! As far as finding your shade, I agree with Jules, it's really just testing colors and experimenting.

Expand full comment

Ooh, I like the idea of a lip crayon! That seems less intimidating.

Expand full comment

I reallllly love Nars' velvet lip pencils (basically lipstick crayons, they feel easier to use, and smear much less IMO). Also, apparently, the shade Dragon Girl is one that Taylor often wears! https://www.narscosmetics.com/USA/velvet-matte-lip-pencil/999NACVTMLP01.html

They're kinda pricey, but I find they last ages (I just replaced my fave color, and I think I had the other one for like 2 years?)

And there are sooooooo many shades of red. lol. I know I have a cooler complexion so cool (almost purpley) reds look much better on me than orangey-reds, but I also figured that out through a lot of trial and error. haha. I usually go to Ulta/Sephora and try a bunch of different colors (testing on my hand) and then pick a couple faves to try (on my face) in-store. Plus, their return policy is pretty great, if you do buy it and end up not loving it. :)

Expand full comment

That's really good to know. I know there's an Ulta near me but I've been too intimidated to go in!

Jamie, you did your friend proud because this was fantastic! I really enjoyed reading you and Erin's "love story" and to see a friendship of so many years continue to grow and support one another! Sending prayers to Erin-you're awesome!

Ha! I totally thought it was because you raised rabbits. 😄 Thanks for subbing in. And I love how you can seamlessly weave side-eye about the treatment of women and resources for better information into a link for a blanket. 🤌

Swipes, yesterday was the first day in a month and a half that I was able to sit down for any length of time without pain. 🏆 It may all fall apart today, but that was proof that my back is healing. Woohoo!

Like a lot of folks, I got into painting my nails during the pandemic thanks to Olive and June. In fact I think I used a code from Erin for my first box? I have thin nails that peel, and their nail strengthener has done wonders for my nails! Olive and June.https://www.target.com/p/olive-38-june-nail-strengthener/-/A-82869513

Now I'm adding in other strengthening products.

I've used this with success in the past and have added it back in, but it is a jar of cream so more complicated to apply. I keep it on my nightstand. Hard As Hoof

https://a.co/d/gycJQlI

I just got this and it is a lovely oil with an easy way to apply. It is mostly jojoba oil, which I've used in the past. I like the applicator. Similar to the O&J one. I keep this in my purse. Bliss Kiss

https://a.co/d/8SkXR8A

Something new I'm trying is a strengthening base coat that I learned about on YouTube. Rejuvacote 2

https://a.co/d/aBQdYmt

This week's manicure is black and purple in honor of my first ever viewing of The Craft. Ha! I'd never seen it! And of course Hulu is pushing all the Spooky season movies right now. Watching it as a middle-aged woman, I just want to get those girls into counseling.

Feel better soon, Erin!

Dawn, THANK YOU for the list of nail strengthening products! I have thin, fragile, peeling nails, that also bend down and back toward the finger tip as they grow out. I’ve been using O&J for a few months now, and I did get the Hard as Hoof cream. But I’m still struggling with my overused left hand; so much peeling and cracking! But I will persevere. Hoping your additional tools will make a difference.

It takes a while, I think. There can be dietary and other health causes too, but wow, have these things helped my nails. I hope these work for you too!

Welcome Jamie! Thanks for bringing us the goodness today, especially the Naturium recs. As a former teacher, I love a sub that shows up with their own lesson plans.

After living in MI for almost 7 months, I've finally registered my vehicle! My anxiety said this would be a terrible experience, so I've been putting it off for months. I went yesterday, was there for 15 min and it was easy!

I'm working from home today which means that I'm making a giant cardboard cookie, some aardvark ears, ripping a bunch of fabric strips and probably doing little else. Children's librarians do the most random stuff, lol.

My house is at a moment of peace and I'm feeling so much less overwhelmed. Finding out how expensive windows are just kinda shattered my confidence about home projects for a bit. My parents are very much never-spend-money people so seeing that price tag made me question myself, but now I'm looking forward to how much nicer my home will look and feel in a few weeks.

My SIL bday is this weekend, so we're going to a cider mill tomorrow and brunch on Sunday, both of which sound lovely.

Have the best weekend, friends. I can't wait to catch up in the comments.

Expand full comment

Ugh I hear you about the windows. I think ours are no longer waterproof. Or at least one is not. I'm really worried about the size of the repair... So putting it off. It's not getting smaller!

Expand full comment

I love that your job involved a giant cookie and aardvark ears. 😁

The windows will be worth it! And there are energy rebates and tax credits sometimes. We redid our house last year and I am so glad we did. They may a huge difference in the heat/cold.

Have fun celebrating!

Jamie, thank you so much for subbing for Erin this week on The Swipe Up. Just know that I will be sneaking out to the bathroom to gossip with friends at some point during our in-class movie. Praying that Erin's wrist and all her picklefall injuries heal up quickly. Fall colors are at their peak here in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area, so I'll have to gawk around this weekend in between outdoor chores. We're rapidly getting to the end of our not-yet-frosty weekends here, so I have to make every minute count outside. Still lots to get done, but soon enough we'll be trapped in our homes for months, so I'll take it. Hope you all have a delightful weekend!

What a delight to find you in the Swipe Up today, Jamie! I have both N.T. Wright podcasts cued up for this weekend as I deep clean my house. Adding your Naturium recs to my cart and contemplating a Kindle button/scroll situation similar to your Tik Tok ring. I truly love technology!

Erin, much love to you in your recovery era! May your DDP be frosty and your family willing servants.
