Getting on this late, but - I’m reading memento mori - my freebie from my preorder if I’ve got questions! I’ve really enjoyed it so far. Also, I def cried at that one of the 4th graders 😭😭 thanks as always!
Lucky for y'all that I've been thinking about Woody Guthrie non-stop for the past month and now I'm going to make it everyone's problem.
- There's a lot more to This Land is Your Land than the one verse and chorus we learned in the first grade. It's actually wild to me that they taught us part of that song and then thought we wouldn't find out about the rest of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AePCvFrggZM
- For when you have some feelings about Christian Nationalism (see also: Your Flag Decal Won't Get You Into Heaven Anymore by John Prine): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KZg_t9UyJY
- Highly recommend Behind the Bastards most recent anti-bastard holiday special on Woody. He was a complicated guy, but I really think he tried to make things better for people where he could.
- I read Bound for Glory last year and even if you're not familiar with his music it's a stunner. He calls it an autobiography, more objective sources call it an autobiographical novel, and it is probably moderately fictional. Woody's writing can cut to the quick in any medium and if you want to understand Depression/Dust Bowl-era America from the people who were impacted most severely, this is the book.
I want to stress that No Other Land *is* playing in US theatres, it's just only playing in independent theatres right now. I highly encourage you all to do some googling to see if it's playing near you (I literally just searched "no other land" and the city for the list below), and if so, get to a theatre! It's a wonderfully made film, plus, you get to support independent theatres, which are vital and needed right now.
I did a little research and here's a sampling of where it's currently playing:
Los Angeles: Laemmle chain, Alamo Drafthouse
NYC: Film Forum, Alamo Drafthouse, BAM, New Plaza Cinema
NJ: Garden Theatre
Dallas: Angelika
Austin: Alamo Drafthouse
Houston: River Oaks Theatre
Chicago: Alamo Drafthouse
Boston: Coolidge Corner Theatre, West Newton Cinema
If there is ever a Lil Swipes in-person event, can we PLEASE have a lady/mom prom? 🙏
I finally added my rep and senators’ DC numbers to my contacts this week, and that has made it a lot easier for my ADHD brain to just make the damn call. I’m also trying to find something to thank them for when I call, although it’s a lot easier with Sen. Slotkin and Peters than our Republican rep. 🫠
A treasure this week: realizing that my curly hair needed some clarifying shampoo, and that was why none of my products were working (to the point where I was fantasizing about cutting it all off). It’s a small thing, but finally have a good hair day was so nice!!
I got to see No Other Land a couple of weeks ago and highly highly recommend! Even though it doesn't officially have distribution, there are small independent theaters showing it (Tara has it in Atlanta) and it is worth every second. Our whole theater just sat for a solid 5 min afterwards to soak in what is obviously a very difficult watch, but I was struck by how beautifully human the film is? Like as much as Palestine feels like A Topic right now, this film is just people showing you what is going on in their lives.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you for curating this gift to all of us today. In the midst of so much that is spiraling out of control, you are providing an anchor.
Treasures! Ep. 280 of The Medieval Podcast hosted by Danièle Cybulskie, How to Live Like a Monk in Stressful Times. Danièle is always soothing to listen to, but she breaks from her usual historical deep-dives in this episode to address current events. Also, our snow is melting! I know we haven’t seen the last of it, but I have never been so happy to see mud in my life. In a burst of uncharacteristic optimism, I sowed sweet peas yesterday.
I just read this post and it seems very relevant to your interests: https://open.substack.com/pub/romancingthephone/p/the-year-of-dramione-fanfiction

Thank you for the 5Calls rec! I just started Spring Break and now I know how I will spend the next 9 days! 🤍

Man, that post about work was so so good. I have a strange assortment of jobs and I try so hard to do them well.

The anchor is made of cheese, but it is there.

Oh I am 100000% gonna check this one out. Thank you Kelcey!
I would’ve never known about what happened re JD Vance in VT without you. So so impressed.
Right?! They understood the assignment.
