Hello friends! First off, Erin, congrats on being kicked out of the Pirates Who Don't Do Anything club, since you can now say that you have, indeed been to Boston in the fall. (Veggie Tales iykyk)
I started a new job a month ago, after being more or less out of the formal work force for the past fourteen years. I've been a little ambivalent about it because it had nothing to do with my prior work experience and is perceived by most middle-class Americans as low-status - it's the first job I've had since I graduated college over twenty years ago that didn't require a bachelor's degree. The thing is, I LOVE IT. There's a ton of variety, I'm working with great people, and learning something new pretty much every day. It's been an interesting journey, for sure!
I have the day off today. I have had my annual Pumpkin Spice Latte, and I'm not going to clean the kitchen after all. I still haven't watched Greta's LW, so maybe that's next.
I heard a lady working at the grocery store talking about how passionate she was about it, and more power to her, and to you. The world is better when people find work they enjoy that's meaningful to them.
Y'all I am so grateful for all your advice last week about what to do while babysitting 2 girls (4 & 7) for a whole weekend!! Erin, the glow sticks in the bathtub idea was GOLD. I may have ruined normal baths forever for them. ๐
Those girls were fun, but so *intense* (and I am very glad I was compensated appropriately ๐คฃ). I came home Sunday night exhausted and told my husband we are not having kids for 30 more years. ๐
Now for some treasures and turds:
๐คง I've felt pretty congested and lacking energy this week and that is just poopy. Hoping some actual rest this weekend will help me feel back to normal.
๐ข My boss's last day at his job is today. He's leaving for a better job with better pay, so I'm really happy for him. But he is also the best boss I've ever worked under, so it sucks to know that I don't get to learn from his leadership or wisdom everyday anymore. The transition period is also going to be very long before we bring someone else in, so I'm feeling some anxiety over what things will look like for our team going forward.
โญ๏ธ But in V V FUN news, I am seeing Hamilton tomorrow!! My parents are making the 2 hour drive from San Diego to LA to see it with us, so it will likely be a little stressful. But I'm so excited, I could cry!
๐ Lastly, I would covet your prayers, if you have any extra! On Sunday night I am leading our church's college group through the book of Jonah. I am really excited and a little nervous. Even though I went to seminary and studied to do this exact thing, I'm still feeling some jitters. ๐
Okay y'all. I'm excited to chat with you in the comments! ๐
Every time I see my three year old niece, it's like I have extreme birth control for at least 6 months. She's very cute and I love her dearly but also she's three. Best of luck with your job - change can be hard, especially when people who are wonderful leave!
I have been officially unemployed for a week so here I am on a Friday morning with all the cool kids. It turns out the job I had kind of set my heart on can't actually afford me. I'm disappointed because I really liked the people there and think I could have been a real asset to them, but it sounds like the Executive Director has a lot of work to do to get their house in order before they can really lean into the next phase of growth.
I was telling a good friend about all of the above and she said "we need to find you a rich man so you can take whatever job you want without having to worry about pay or benefits". And I said "no joke" and did she know any besides her cousin and she said "what about cousin's friend?" I've met cousin's friend once, he seems nice but lives far away so I didn't really think much about it. So anyway I may or may not be getting set up this weekend when we're all down at the river. Ts and Ps that I can act like a normal human because that's always a crapshoot in any social situation. #introvertprobs
Movie wrap-up: Fight scenes are not usually a thing I get excited about, but the ones in Shang-Chi were incredible. I saw an interview with Michelle Yeoh (literal queen) where she talked about how when she started doing action movies learning the martial arts was nbd because it was choreographed just like dance and she was a dancer by training. That dance/choreography aspect really shines in this movie. The Eyes of Tammy Faye was a beautiful portrait of a deeply flawed person that mainly just wanted people to know they were seen and loved. Vincent D'Onofrio as Jerry Falwell is one of the most menacing things I've seen on-screen in awhile, so you can also get in some Halloween spooks. I was deeply uncomfortable every time he was in a scene. Also recommend the You're Wrong About episode on the Bakkers and Jessica Hahn if you haven't heard it.
I am here for movie wrap-up! And yes, Michelle Yeoh is amazing! Best of luck this weekend, I hope you will have a lot of fun no matter what happens and being normal is overrated if you ask me ๐
I keep telling my husband that my dream is to live like a 53 year old retired woman with no children and plenty of expendable income. 'Tis a dream. Best of luck this weekend! Acting like a normal human with potential suitors truly is a toughie. I cannot believe I landed my husband because I am basically a lunatic. I am sure it will be lovely!
That truly is the dream. The only other time I've been set up was by my mother even though I REALLY didn't want to and it did not go well, so it's gotta be better than that, right?
One day, I will have to tell you about the first (and only) Tinder date I ever went on. It was terrible and made me delete the app and all other dating apps that night. So I am going to guess that you can only go up from here!
Good morning to the best people on the internet! Itโs been a WEEK.
My poor mother fell and broke both of her elbows. What in the world? Sheโs been in a lot of pain and just super uncomfortable so thatโs been tough. Iโve been trying to do it all so she can rest but Iโm not the best cook so the eating has been a challenge.
My treasures for this week include a really good caramel latte, getting my Sseko hostess goodies in (if youโre sleeping on Sseko...donโt sleep any longer, Iโll give you a link) and a long chat with a great friend.
Best part of my week? I get to meet Erin in person tomorrow and go on many stupid walks with her this weekend!! โจโจโจโจ
This week has been a FREAKIN DOOZY, but I'm happy to finally be back in the comments. I'm looking forward to a restful 3 day weekend.
I was unable to make the AUA last night, but I walked out of small group to a bunch of texts from Lil Swipes saying that the Eatin' Cheez-Its playlist Hannah, Jillian, and I made has become Popcast famous and I immediately began fangirling. For context, a couple months ago, Knox made fun of Jamie for having a playlist for everything and gave the example of having a playlist for eatin' Cheez-Its so we decided to create one that fits that vibe. Some of our other playlist works include: sexysad, uptempo emo, and RealFeel95 (which is a playlist for bad days when the temperature SAYS its 80 degrees, but the real feel is 95). We call ourselves The Playlist Council, and yes, we will be signing autographs at the Chicago liveshow. Here is the link to Eatin' Cheez-Its if anyone is interested. It is definitely a Friday vibe: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5wfHH5UNPVGDmGPBPKubRC?si=S4VmFxY6Q66S4jk0Z1Q_mg
Speaking of the Chicago live show, I'm SO FREAKING EXCITED. I'm so stoked to have some of the Lil Swipes stay in my home, snuggle my pup, and see Knox, Jamie, and Erin in-person. April can't get here soon enough.
There's been a lot of crap and tough stuff this week, but I've got some treasures lined up for this weekend:
- I'm serving on the worship team at my new church for the first time. I've joined a small group, waiting until I can serve in children's ministry, taking a bible class my church offers, and now getting involved in worship team. My church involvement was huge and took up a good part of my weekly schedule before my church shut down and the pandemic began, so it feels good to get things back to normal and to be back in community.
- The Bible Recap continues to be a blessing and I've really treasured going through it with the Lil Swipes this year.
- I've been wearing the mess outta my first pair of Rothys and y'all were right. They are great. And because they give discounts to school staff, I didn't feel like I paid an arm and a leg for them.
I was debating on flying from LA to see the Popcast Live in either Chicago or Seattle, but you are making a strong case for coming to Chicago! Potential Lil Swipes Brunch?? I'm all over that. ๐
Playlist immediately downloaded. Thank you all for your service and I cannot wait to have this playing in my ears all day. I WILL SEE YOU IN CHICAGO. How do we plan a giant Lil Swipes dinner? Or brunch? Or museum stroll? Truly I just want to hug you all and be attached at the hips.
New England in the fall is on my travel bucket list - I hope you have a wonderful time, Erin!
That tweet by Sharon Hodde Miller is TRUTH. I was ADAMANT for our wedding that we must do all pictures beforehand so that our guests did not have to wait hours to eat.
Also, the tweet about tasks and baby goats - IT ME.
Treasures:
๐: finally getting some autumnal weather and impromptu play dates with friends at parks.
๐ค: The dis/entangle pre-work has gotten me reflecting on ways I havenโt done in ages. I am really looking forward to the group starting this week.
๐ท: watched Black Widow this week - was it the most amazing Marvel movie ever made? No, but it was a fun return to the MCU after a Loki hangover.
I made these for brunch with my inlaws and they were a hit with everyone.
๐ฅ: Twice Baked Almond Croissant from 1900 Barker. If you are ever in Lawrence, Kansas 1) let me know! Iโd love to meet you in person! And 2) go to 1900 Barker Bakery. They have my favorite breakfast treat, their bread is a delight, and their dirty Chai is perfection https://1900online.square.site
DID IT HURT WHEN I TOLD YOU TO GOOGLE IT AND I WAS RIGHT
Wow I love that tweet. Erin, have so much fun in New England this weekend! I hope itโs lovely.
Some treasures this week:
๐ I made Bri Mckoyโs sundried tomato soup on Sunday and it was A M A Z I N G. I canโt wait to try all her other recipes!
๐ I found a tiktok that showed me how to replace the ugly boob light in my house without replacing the mounting mechanism or anything so Iโm V stoked about putting new lighting in my living room!
๐ I had a meeting with the owner of Salt & Honey the other day (she was in SPAIN for 10 days living her best life and every photo she took was the most beautiful photo I have ever seen) and she said she was so happy that I was able to just put out any fires while she was gone and take care of everything - it means so much that she feels like she can trust me.
๐ I missed the AUA for the popcast last night but Amanda texted me to let me know when theyโll be in Chicago and now I am DREAMING OF A FUN WEEKEND WITH AMANDA AND MELANIE IN CHI-TOWN. I canโt wait.
Some turds (turds will be represented as an old white man, as that is typically something that I donโt enjoy)
๐ด๐ป I had a panic attack on Sunday and it really sent me spiraling - it was not good. I still feel like I am recovering. It caused my therapist to ask if I was taking any medication (Iโm not) but I know that that is the measuring stick for how I am doing - if she has to ask if I am on medication, Iโm not well.
๐ด๐ป I was not warned how many old people I would be talking to at this new job and boy howdy is it a lot. I donโt do well with grumpy old men lol so I have been sassy. ยฏ\_(ใ)_/ยฏ
๐ด๐ป Still trying to figure out how to budget/live with my pay periods being so far apart now. It has definitely made it tough! I donโt love being in this weird scramble to pay bills and I am hoping we figure it out next week. On the bright side, this next paycheck will be the first one where my full time hours are on it since I started my nรฉe job and I will have almost 10 overtime hours so it should be big!
Excited to see how your weeks have been. Also I am tenderly walking into the waters of dis/entangle and I am eager to see where we go, together. If you arenโt a lil swipe+ I highly recommend joining us!
Shelby, that tweet was my favorite too!! ๐ I once had an argument with a friend's Dad that JFK was in NYC. I took all my common grace not to have him Google it. ๐
That sundried tomato soup is my FAVE, thank you for reminding me of it, I will be making it on this rainy weekend. ๐
Panic attacks are the absolute worst. I know how spiral-y they can feel and it is awful. Praying for you and here if you want somebody to just sit with you in it. โค๏ธ
Imagining you being sassy to grumpy old men is giving me LIFE this morning. ๐
Let's see if I can convince my husband to fly to Chicago for the Popcast Live!!!
Get some fancy bread to eat with it - 10/10 so good!!! And thank you for the prayers. โค Girl I am flying to Chicago BY MYSELF. GIRL'S TRIP 2022 srry love my husband but this is lil swipe territory and he need not come ๐
Good morning from the library! I'm finishing my first full week at the new job and overall am loving it. The pace and stress level is so much better and I actually get breaks! My sweet supervisor is great about making sure we take our full am, lunch, and pm breaks. Breaks as a teacher are just when you're able to get to the bathroom for 5 minutes. I am still figuring out how to balance grad work with these hours. Working 8:45-5:45 is very different than 7:45-4.
A few treasures:
I've already done two craft projects for work, hahaha. I'm all about a good craft!
An older couple from my church lives about 10 min from my library and they had me over for dinner, which was so nice. They've really made themselves a cozy cottage in the woods.
Another church member, who I visit at her library, came to visit and bring me a coffee yesterday.
Your new job sounds so lovely! It is really wonderful to have a supervisor who really cares about your time throughout the day and wants to ensure that you get the breaks and have time to yourself every day. So glad it all sounds so lovely right now!
Erin, New England is on our list of places to travel in the next few years, so please let us know what you like and what to skip! If anyone else has good New England recommendations, plz let me know :)
Turd:
- Have y'all ever dealt with a difficult neighbor? My husband and I are pretty private and really keep to ourselves. If our neighbors are doing something we don't like we just mind our business unless we think a serious felony might be occurring. We haven't had any real run-ins with our neighbors until yesterday.... A cute old couple recently moved in next door and I was so happy with the way they keep their yard so nice and tidy. The wife is always outside fixing something and will wave at us when we pass by. Yesterday my husband was cutting our yard and the wife came over and yelled (actually yelled) at him because he was blowing the grass trimmings into her yard. Jordan apologized and tried to fix it but she continued yelling about it. Jordan (an enneagram 9, mind you) was so overwhelmed he can't remember what he said in response, but he said it wasn't polite, and then just went inside for the rest of the day :( I do not want to have beef with my neighbors. Do y'all think we should just ignore/forget that interaction, or should I go over and talk to her, or what should we do?
Treasures:
- My beach trip last weekend with my friends who were against taking a covid test prior to going went really well. I think everyone who was miffed worked it out with our pregnant friend before we got there and everyone was so pleasant. It was really nice to just have some girl time.
- I got some new Olive & June fall colors and I am absolutely loving them!!! It's such a treat!
- We finished watching Reservation Dogs on Hulu and it was so freaking good! The episodes were short and smart. I loved it.
Can't wait to catch up with y'all in the comments :)
As an enneagram 9 myself, just reading about your husband's experience is raising my heart rate. I second Jacki's suggestion, and also would add that if they've seemed perfectly nice until now, it's likely there is more going on than just an obsession with grass clippings. Like Shelby said, maybe dementia, or maybe some other stressful life situation - caring for dying parents, Covid fears, etc. - has them focused on controlling the one thing they can: their yard. Idk, when someone is that unreasonable, I try to imagine what must be going on for them that makes it worth going berserk over something so small.
WAIT! Another treasure: on my way home from Florida on Sunday I got to stop and get a Breakfast Burger from What-A-Burger!!!! If you live near a What-A-Burger you need to make it a priority to go get this. It was so delicious and kept me full until dinner time.
Ahhh, that neighbor situation sounds so stressful! I think if I were in that situation, I would probably bake a little treat and take it next door, and have a little chat (โhey. So very sorry that the way we were doing our yard work was upsetting to you. We really were not trying to get anything into your yard and will try our hardest to make sure that doesnโt happen again.) I always want to be the kind of person who has a good relationship with a neighbor and since unresolved/awkward interactions tend to gnaw at me, thatโs probably the route I would start with? ๐คท๐ปโโ๏ธ
When planning a trip to New England, I have to absolutely recommend going to Woodstock, VT. It has a big Gilmore Girls energy.
Recommend staying at the Woodstocker B&B. Iโm not a B&B fan normally (I donโt want to make friends where Iโm staying) but this was gorgeous and also private and felt so safe to stay in during Covid. Itโs walking distance from the town and also from an amazing park to hike or trail run. The Google reviews on this place are not overhyped.
Woodstock is also not far from other amazing towns like Hanover, NH (where Dartmouth is),Queechee,VT, and about 90 minutes south of Burlington, VT.
Sorry about your neighbor. I have an elderly neighbor with dementia and she is really awful and mean to me (I donโt think itโs intentional, but yelling at someone from across the street and saying, โOH MY GOD, YOU ARE SO FAT, YOUโRE GOING TO KILL YOURSELFโ isnt my idea of a good hang) so I all but refuse to go outside when she is anywhere near. I also donโt get along with old people very well. So, I donโt have advice, but solidarity. Just know for every interaction you have with her, I am probably hiding in my house to avoid seeing my neighbor.
Today I'm unpacking from a rained out camping trip in the Smokey Mountains. Camping works best when you expect to be uncomfortable. And when you get home, your home looks huge because it is larger than a tent.
I would love a book list of favorite books for dealing with depression.
If You Feel Too Much by Jamie Tworkowski was really helpful for me the first time I dealt with a depressive episode. It's not specifically about how to walk through depression, but it's essays from someone who has been there. And it's hopeful.
Iโm reading this late tonight before going to sleep, and the โprecision of a baby goatโ tweet has me about to fall on the floor laughing. I just see itโs little hooves trying to pick stuff up, and I canโt deal. ๐ **Also trying not to wake up my husband and 5 month old baby with my laughing makes me feel like a kid passing notes at Baptist Church all over again.

โจโจโจโจ
I love Sseko! I have flip flops and the ribbon sandals and love them so much. What hostess goodies did you get?!
The ribbon sandals are my favorite! I got the Bwindi sweatshirt, the Knotted Hoops, a fun bracelet and a couple bags of coffee! ๐
I'm sorry about your mother, I really hope she feels better soon. And I hope you will have a lovely weekend with lots of stupid walks!
Thank you! Iโm hoping sheโll be feeling stronger every day :) Hope you have a good weekend too!!
Your mother! Oh no, that makes me so sad for her! TWO broken elbows - jeez louise. Have so much fun this weekend with Erin!
I know, itโs awful! I hate seeing her in pain. Note to self: donโt fall, ever.
Morning, friends!
Here's hoping for a restful weekend for us all!
That playlist is AMAZING!
Thank you!
Am I listening to Eatin' Cheez-Its right now? Yes, yes I am!
The Playlist Council 4EVA ๐ค will be working on my signature from now until April.
Playlist added and I added a few songs!
I was debating on flying from LA to see the Popcast Live in either Chicago or Seattle, but you are making a strong case for coming to Chicago! Potential Lil Swipes Brunch?? I'm all over that. ๐
CHICAGOOOOOO LETS DO IT JULIANA
I'M READYYYYYY
Playlist immediately downloaded. Thank you all for your service and I cannot wait to have this playing in my ears all day. I WILL SEE YOU IN CHICAGO. How do we plan a giant Lil Swipes dinner? Or brunch? Or museum stroll? Truly I just want to hug you all and be attached at the hips.
Yes! We'll have to plan something!
๐: The Lazy Genius pumpkin chocolate chip muffins: https://www.thelazygeniuscollective.com/blog/pumpkinmuffins
Have the loveliest weekend available to you, all!
Those muffins look so good! Adding to my list.
"turds will be represented as an old white man, as that is typically something that I donโt enjoy" I am actually laughing out loud here!
Yesssssss the old white men turds are so true.
I'm glad you thought it was funny - the old white man emoji just felt most fitting!
GIRL'S TRIP 2022 srry love my husband but this is lil swipe territory and he need not come ๐
๐ด๐ป Might be my fav turd emoji ever๐คฃ
It's just so fitting. ๐
Iโm so excited to join you for dis/entangle! ๐
So glad we are in this together!
LITERALLY cannot wait for Chicago! It's already on my calendar - only six months from today!!!
Look at you being the best at your new job (grumpy old men notwithstanding)!
I'm so sorry about your panic attack, that's the worst. I hope this weekend is restorative for you <3
We have to plan all the things. ALL THE THINGS, MEL. โค
I am SO excited for the Chicago show. I can't wait to pack my house with Lil Swipes sleepover-style.
I canโt wait!!!
The new job sounds amazing!!!
Wow, it sounds like a great job, I'm so happy for you!
Iโm so glad things at your new job are going well!
I'm so glad your first week went so well! Your job sounds wonderful!
Your new job sounds so lovely! It is really wonderful to have a supervisor who really cares about your time throughout the day and wants to ensure that you get the breaks and have time to yourself every day. So glad it all sounds so lovely right now!
Good morning my sweet friends!!!
I'm so glad the trip went well and was fun! :) I really hope the situation with your neigbors can be resolved in the best way possible.
The only good thing about Texas is What-A-Burger and it saddens my heart that we don't have it in Utah. I bet it was delicious!
This all sounds so dreamy! Thank you for these recs!
OMG your neighbor sounds Yikes and I am so sorry!!! Solidarity, sister!
